60 Days of Data Only iPhone

I just got my second iPad data plan renewal receipt email today.  60 Days without a voice plan has been awesome!  I’ve now saved $210 over the past 2 months!  My minute and text message usage is way up due to my “chatty cathy” friends.  My average was around 500 minutes a month when I had a voice plan, but now I’m closer to 2000 and my texts are up from 900 to 1500.  The majority of my outgoing calls have been over 3G and incoming has been about 50/50 wifi/3G.

6 months ago I decided to cancel my $105/mo AT&T bill.  I had a Google Voice account which gave me a phone number, and a VOIP provider called Gizmo5 that let me answer and make calls with my GV number.  I took 2 months to test calls over 3G and make sure that I was going to cancel.  Initially I was going to submit paperwork to AT&T so that I could switch my plan to data only, however my conscience and timing got in the way.  Sometime went by and I started giving out my GV number to new contacts.

2 months ago I was reading some blogs one morning when I discovered that the iPad SIM card would work in the iPhone by changing a small setting.  I drove across town to use a friend’s iPad, set up an unlimited data account and cancelled my cell phone plan.  Since then I’ve been using a combination of Skype and VOIP iPhone apps that use data only to have a 100% normal phone.

So far the only drawback is that lost my cellphone number that I’ve had for 10 years.  I really wish Google Voice supported number portability.  However the bonus is that I’ve weeded out a lot of people that had my number.
